The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will allow students to take Class Xth Board Exams twice a year beginning in 2026.
A meeting led by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan with CBSE officials and heads of major educational bodies like NCERT, KVS, and NVS for a discussion focused on draft schemes that will be opened for public consultation. The key announcement from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is the introduction of multiple board exams annually.
This will allow students to take their exams twice and retain their best score. This reform aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes flexibility and a student-centered approach to education.
According to a ministry official, the initiative aims to move away from a high-pressure, one-time examination system by offering students multiple attempts. This change is designed to help students improve their performance without the stress of a single high-stakes test. The goal is to create a more supportive learning environment that emphasizes conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization.
The move also contributes to NEP's mission of inclusivity by supporting students experiencing difficulties like as exam anxiety or illness.
Providing many attempts ensures that students from varied backgrounds have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their ability. CBSE is also increasing teacher training to guarantee a smooth transition to the progressive evaluation approach.
